It's not just about climate change. It's not just the climate that's changing. Everything is changing. Water pollution, soil pollution, air pollution, less and less drinking water. Everything is degrading. And this also affects our health. Ours and the Earth's.

Although there has been a concept addressing all these problems in an integrated way since 2015, called "planetary health," it's still not talked about here.

Chiara Cadeddu, a public health physician, explains this concept to us, why we should care, and why the discussion about climate must also extend to:

  • the health of all of us
  • mental health
  • eco-anxiety and depression among young people
  • the excessive use of pesticides
  • the risk of new bacteria or viruses spreading

Frequently Asked Questions

What is planetary health and why is it important?

Planetary health is a concept that integrates environmental issues with human health, highlighting the interconnection between them. It is important because environmental changes, such as pollution and the degradation of natural resources, affect not only the planet but also our physical and mental health.

How do climate changes affect mental health?

Climate changes contribute to increased eco-anxiety and depression among young people, due to uncertainty and a sense of helplessness in the face of global challenges. This anxiety can have negative effects on individuals' mental and emotional well-being.

What are the risks associated with pesticide use?

Excessive use of pesticides can lead to soil and water contamination, affecting ecosystems and human health. It can also contribute to the spread of new bacteria or viruses, endangering public health.

Why is it important to discuss climate in the context of public health?

Discussing climate in the context of public health is essential to highlight the impact of environmental changes on human health. By addressing these issues in an integrated manner, we can find more effective solutions to protect both the planet and our health.

How can eco-anxiety among young people be addressed?

Addressing eco-anxiety among young people requires a combination of education, emotional support, and engagement in environmental actions. It is important for young people to be encouraged to participate in solutions to climate issues, which can provide them with a sense of control and purpose.
