Gender Equality - SDG 5

Achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls

Gender equality can be seen as an indicator for developed societies. The global population includes over 50% women; however, there are numerous inequalities between men and women, such as lower wages, domestic violence, and issues of emancipation.

The gender one is born with does not affect dignity and quality of life in developed societies.

The Coalition for Gender Equality was established in 2014, at the initiative of five non-governmental organizations in the field of women's rights (Partnership for Equality Center, Front Association, AnA Feminist Analysis Society, Association for Freedom and Gender Equality, and E-Romnja Association) which had collaborated since 2009-2010 to organize feminist actions in the public sphere on the topic of gender equality and violence against women. The Coalition was created within the project "Coalition for Gender Equality", financed through EEA Grants 2009-2014 under the NGO Fund in Romania. Subsequently, other non-governmental organizations joined the Coalition, with the total number of members currently being 11.

F.R.E.E is an official association registered in Romania and accredited by the government to provide social services and licensed for its reception center. Founded in 2013 after years of working with street children and in orphanages, the F.R.E.E association now works to rescue women and girls who are victims of sexual exploitation. Indeed, Romania is known as one of the main countries of origin for the sex industry in Europe, as well as a transit point and destination for human trafficking for forced prostitution. Our primary goal is to free, heal, and empower these sexually exploited women so that they can build the life and future they desire. The association's mission is to reach women caught in or vulnerable to prostitution, to support those who want to break free from the sex trade and build a new life with dignity, to holistically restore the lives of the victims we encounter, to offer them alternatives, and ultimately, to prevent and raise awareness about the issue of human trafficking for sexual exploitation.
